Dance Extravaganza
A wonderful night of Dance was on display at the annual Christian College Dance Extravaganza, held at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre.
On stage were performers instructed by Mrs. Kirralee Badham from Year 3 – 8 at Bellarine, Year 4 at Junior School and Year 5 – 7 at Middle School. In addition the Junior School Year 3 students, instructed by Ms. Laura Elshout and Year 2 by Mrs. Debbie Riddle also performed.

The night was compared by the new ‘star of the stage’ Mr. Tony Costa who entertained and thrilled the audience with his jokes, dance moves and general banter with audience.
The night’s success would not have been possible without the support and assistance of the whole College community and we thank everyone who was involved for their support.

A Magnificent Time of Celebration for Year 12 Class of 2009
Staff and students had a wonderful day of celebration highlighting a successful conclusion to their formal Year 12 studies. We all enjoyed a cooked breakfast of bacon, eggs and pancakes. Students marched through a Senior school guard of honour to the Carnival site.

Everyone celebrated the party atmosphere singing karaoke, riding the bucking bull, sumo wrestling, jumping castles and speeding around in mini jeeps. The day concluded with a moving Worship Service led by College Captains. __________________________________________
Excellence in Music Performance at Royal South Street
The Christian College Geelong Music department has had an outstanding year in performance and competition. This weekend saw the culmination of two weeks of instrumental competitions at the Royal South Street Competitions, which annually attract entries from schools all over Victoria resulting in the participation of around 4000 students.
The competition finished with the finale and blue ribbon event of Victorian High School Concert Bands being held in Her Majesty’s Theatre, Ballarat. The ‘Advanced Concert Bands’ section is an elite performance section and has been dominated by two Melbourne schools for nearly twenty years. Last Saturday night saw Christian College Geelong Senior Wind Symphony taking out the ‘Yamaha Prize for Senior Concert Bands’ ahead of Blackburn High School and Eltham High School. The victorious 58-piece wind band, under the conductor’s baton of Mr Andrew Dunlop, has recently performed an Australian Premier of a new composition in August at the Melbourne Schools Bands Festival receiving a Gold Award; from this achievement they have now gone on to take the ‘big prize’ in Ballarat.
Christian College’s Director of Music Mrs. Fiona Gardner explained that many of the Christian College ensembles and soloists took out prizes in their various sections at the competitions but the Colleges concert bands made a big impact in taking first prize in every division they competed.

The Lone Pine - 'Lest We Forget'
At the School’s A.N.Z.A.C. Ceremony in Johnson Park, Geelong the Junior School House Captains were given a special Lone Pine seedling to take back to school. This cutting was propagated from the Lone Pine tree at the Australian War Memorial.
The Aleppo Pine in the Memorial’s grounds was planted by HRH The Duke of Gloucester on the 24 October 1934. It bears the following inscription: “After the capture of the Lone Pine ridge in Gallipoli (6 August 1915), an Australian Soldier who had taken part in the attack, in which his brother was killed, found a cone on one of the branches used by the Turks as overhead cover for their trenches, and sent it to his mother. From seed shed by it she raised the tree, which she presented to be planted in the War Memorial grounds in honour of her own and others’ sons who fell at Lone Pine.”
The seedling has recently been planted at the front of Junior School in Belmont. A special plaque will be installed next to our Lone Pine tree to remind future students of its special significance.

‘Fiddler on the Roof’- the 2009 College Production
The 2009 College Musical Production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ showcased some extraordinary student musical and dramatic talent last weekend. On May 1 and 2 at the Ford Theatre, Geelong Performing Arts Centre, close to 100 student actors took the large audiences into the 1905 world of Tevye, the milkman, his wife Golde and the small Jewish settlement of Anatevka in Russia.
Stephen Marsh, as Tevye won the hearts of the audiences with his amazing voice and his interpretation of the leading character as well as popular songs including ‘If I Were a Rich Man’. Hannah Petrie- Allbutt, as Golde, his loyal wife displayed both her dramatic and musical skills in the presentation of numbers such as ‘Do you love me?’
The principal cast members were well supported by the large ensemble players and dancers whose exuberance added to the atmosphere of the production.
The 24 members of the production orchestra were students of Christian College who ably added this score to their repertoire.
Congratulations to all the students and staff who made the 2009 production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ a resounding success.

Farum Cats Visit
The Bellarine Year 7 & 8 Boys experienced a unique cultural day on Thursday April 23, hosting a team of Danish AFL footballers.
Both teams gathered for a welcome by Mr. Bart Kroon and Mr. Scott Elliss, where the Danish boy belted out their theme song! This was followed with an opportunity for the boys to get to know each other over morning tea. It was pleasing to see the interest and care shown by the Christian College boys, who had to break down some language barriers to communicate.
The team from Farum has travelled to experience Australian and more specifically AFL culture. The match against the Bellarine team was played in excellent spirit. Understandably, the Danish boys couldn’t control the ball like the College boys; however they were competitive and gave our boys a great hit out before their regular matches begin. The Farum boys will be playing at half time of the Geelong v Brisbane game at Skilled Stadium on Sunday April 26.
