Senior School, Waurn Ponds
Years 10 to 12
Introduction
The Christian College Senior School has established a vibrant and challenging environment for students to complete their final vital years of education. The close and supportive shared working relationship between students and staff provides an atmosphere for individual accountability and achievement. Throughout Years 10 to 12 our educational programme is designed to encourage the successful completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) whilst developing each student's personal growth and character development.
The Academic Programme The wide range of subjects offered caters for the individual learning needs of the students at this vital stage of their educational journey. Christian College Senior School is proud to offer 31 different VCE studies where students can pursue not only purely academic studies in Mathematics, Science, Information Technology, Commerce and Humanities, but also have opportunities to excel within the excellent programmes operating in Music, LOTE, Arts/Technology or Outdoor Education.
The commitment and dedication of our senior staff is constantly evident as they give of their time before and after school, at the weekends, and during the school holidays, to ensure that each student in their class achieves the best success possible.
The Senior School of Christian College is proud of its outstanding academic program. Throughout the years our students have consistently achieved 100% success in obtaining their VCE qualification. In recent years a very pleasing aspect of these results has been the high percentage of students receiving scores over 80. Dux of the College and other highly successful students annually achieve ENTER scores in the high 90's. In individual subject areas many students have achieved study scores of 40 and above, placing them among the highest levels of the Year 12 cohort. Christian College has also celebrated students who have achieved maximum scores of 50, some also receiving the prestigious Premier's Award in the study.
Christian College graduates have gained their choices of tertiary studies having been accepted into courses to study Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, International Studies, International Trade, Arts and Education, Music (including entry to the Victorian College of the Arts), Visual and Performing Arts, Commerce and Business, Engineering, Nursing, Biomedical Science, Radiation Therapy, Science, Psychology, Information Technology, Architecture/Construction, Agriculture/Environment, Film and Television, Media and Communications, Journalism and Hospitality.
Community Service and Involvement Our students enjoy a fine reputation for the qualities they demonstrate in our local and wider community as respectful, caring and thoughtful young men and women. Students at the Senior School participate in community service and fund raising activities that support local and overseas projects, including close ties with central Australian Aboriginal communities, Vietnam (supporting World Vision projects) and the township of Viqueque in East Timor. This allows our students to see their place in our global village whilst developing significant character qualities that encourage them to make a difference in our world.
Innovation and Success Innovative educational structures to assist student achievement have been introduced at the senior campus including allocation of additional time for all subjects in Years 11 and 12, opportunities to gain a ‘head start’ by undertaking a VCE preparation program prior to commencing each new academic year. The introduction of a wireless computer network and large LCD screens in key classroom areas further enhance the integration of the latest technology into the curriculum. The commitment from the College Board was made several years ago, to support small class numbers at VCE level. This provides students with additional access to subject staff to enable high achievement. The recent introduction of an Enhancement Programme in Years 11 and 12 aims to improve student performance through effective study and time management skills.
The House System Since its establishment, the Senior School has been structured into House Groups with students from Years 10, 11 and 12 in each House group. This allows for the commitment and work ethic of the Year 12’s to be experienced by the students in Years 10 and 11. In addition the Year 10’s feel supported and encouraged by the Senior students and Prefects in their House Group.
The House System also supports the spiritual, pastoral, sporting and cultural lives of our students. Each student has daily contact with a House Group Teacher with each day commencing with a devotional and discussion time.
Opportunities for student leadership and service are an integral part of the Senior School experience.
