Year 5

Highton and Bellarine

Year 5 provides a sound introduction to Middle School studies, with a focus on consolidating literacy and numeracy skills, while also continuing specialist subjects including  L.O.T.E, Science and I.C.T.  Many opportunities exist to extend  students’ academic  strengths with  challenging activities such as Tournament of the Minds, Science Talent Search, short story writing competitions as well as Food Design and cooking competitions . In the  Epilepsy Trivia Challenge we reached Grand Final level last  year .

2008 saw the introduction of an innovative programme we call Creative Arts to the Years 5 and 6 curriculum. This has been introduced in order to better engage students in their learning by providing ‘hands  on’ practical subjects.  These often  do not have as much emphasis on assignments, written work and testing as their other academic studies. Drama, Home Economics, Robotics, Woodwork and Dance are very popular and, except for Dance, are undertaken for one Semester each.

In Year 5 students not only learn new skills and concepts, but establish good, lasting relationships with each other. Year 5 is a vibrant and happy learning environment where each individual student is given opportunities to excel.
