Music Education
It is through the experience of listening and appreciating the music of others that much is developed and learned for life. Music education encourages and develops students in many ways. While sharing God’s gift of music, students have the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of themselves, their peers and the world.
It is through the dynamic classroom curriculum from Prep to Year 12 that many benefits are realized. These include academic enhancement, personal development through creative expression, taking responsibility for their learning and commitment, development of coordination and fine motor skills, acquisition of self discipline and tolerance. Learning an instrument as an individual and then giving performances in groups with others also assists the development of self confidence, listening and speaking.
Music education is broad and extensive throughout Christian College, Geelong. The fun and enjoyment of creative expression through music is introduced at Williams House Kindergarten. In the classroom, music is a core study from Prep to Year 8 with elective classroom music studies from Years 8 to 12. Elective classroom music is offered in the Middle School alongside core subjects to extend younger advanced musicians and to prepare students for music studies choices at the Senior Campus. VCE Group and Solo Performance courses are offered with accelerated senior courses in Music allowing VCE studies to commence in Year 10.
There are also optional individual instrumental studies from Years Prep to 12. Many of our students gain extremely high levels of music performance in their secondary music studies because they have had early exposure to instrumental studies with highly skilled tutors. Being involved in the ensembles and performance opportunities offered at Christian College assist students to develop confidence and to refine skills. The Music Department provides many performance opportunities for students including performance nights, performances in the community, AMEB Examinations, Eisteddfod Performances, music camps and regular music tours interstate or overseas.
The Music program at Christian College is the most outstanding program in the region with our senior ensembles performing at an elite level and student solo performers achieving excellent results. There are currently over 600 students taking instrumental tuition at Christian College with 40 specialist instrumental staff. Our program is the ‘bench mark’ for many others, as well as giving each student the opportunity to discover the joy of music and performance.
