Outdoor Education is an elective offered at Christian College from Year 9 level. At VCE it continues as Outdoor and Environmental Studies. This subject is based around the study of a range of Victorian outdoor environments. Students gain knowledge and understanding of each environment and the views and uses by humans since the earliest days. This is implemented through journeying in these environments, enabling students to develop competence in a range of recreation activities.
Participation in activity provides students with a great opportunity to appreciate the intricacies of God's creation. Living in unpredictable and sometimes hostile environments necessitates students being prepared and developing personal independence and group interdependence. This can provide for character development and a life long enjoyment and appreciation of natural places. The Outdoor Education and Environments program includes:
Year 9 Surfcoast beaches through surfing. Anglesea heathlands through cycling and orienteering.
Year 10 Marine environments through snorkelling and Bells Beach revegetation. Brisbane ranges through rock-climbing Otways through horse riding. Alpine environment through snow activity. Riparian environments -Barwon and Murray through paddling and camping.
Year 11 Otways through camping. Grampians through walking. Alpine environment through snow activity. Mt. Arapiles through climbing. Riparians environments - Yarra and Snowy river paddling.
