Moneghetti Regional Basketball Final
The Moneghetti Regional Finals of the VPSSA Basketball competition was held at the Life Be In It Centre between Christian College Geelong and Forest Street Primary School from Wendouree. The Christian College Girls Coached by Mr. Leon O’Neill were vying for a spot in the State Final of this competition.
The game was played at a very fast pace with the team from Wendouree jumping to an early lead. CCG needed to step up and they did with some strong defensive work by Breanna Beckley on Forest Street’s outstanding player. Breanna’s work enabled other team members to mount some renewed offensive efforts with Kate Atkins & Maddison Trewin being on the receiving end of some clever passing from teammates to score & close the gap.
With two minutes remaining in the 4th quarter CCG took the lead by 4 points, they were 2 points up with 50 seconds remaining on the clock, both teams scored again in the dying seconds, with the last basket going to Forest Street, giving them victory by 1 point.
It was a tremendously exciting match and while the CCG girls were disappointed, they will take lessons learnt from that match to the Final of their other Primary Basketball competition – Hooptime Basketball Finals.

Victorian Track and Field Championships
In very hot and dry conditions Christian College students competed at the Victorian All Schools Track and Field Championships on November 6 – 8. We acknowledge all athletes for the time they spent preparing and their perseverance over the weekend in, at times, extreme conditions.
One of the stars of the meet was Year 10 student Damien Birkinhead who won the Under 17 Shot Put (19.21m), Discus (52.53m) and Hammer Throw (61.30m). These are outstanding results against the best athletes in Vcitoria. In the Shot Put Damien threw 4.70 metres further than the second placed athlete!
Holly Curtis, Year 8 ran the 2,000m Steeplchase winning the Under 15 event. This is a new event for Holly and her times are rapidly decreasing as she gains more experience over this challenge course.
In the 200m Hurdles Shelby Hackett, Year 9 placed second in a time of 30.82 seconds. Gilbert Roache, Year 8 was second in the U15 Shot Put with a throw of 14.89m. Lewis Clarke, Year 10 was leading the U16 3000m walk until overtaken in the last lap to record second place.
Place getters and other selected students may have an opportunity to represent Victoria at the National Championships to be held in Hobart during December.

Football Federation Victoria's All Schools Championships
Congratulations to the Intermediate Boys & Girls Soccer who competed with the best teams in the State at the Football Federation Victoria's All Schools Championships. The boys’ team, coached by Mr. Rick Vagnoni missed the Semi Final on goal difference after defeating Westbourne Grammar 4 nil and being defeated by CRC St Albans 2 – 0. The better players on the day were Oliver Hunniford, Tom Day, Rory Fairbairn, Will del Rio.
Playing the reigning State Champions St Monica’s, the College girls began the competition in fine style winning the game 2 – 1. They followed this up with a 1 – 1 draw against the Styner School and a 0 – 1 controversial loss to Sienna College. The final game loss meant the team missed the Semi Finals. The teams’ game plan under coach Ms Van Es was based around a solid defence. With Captains Clare Duck and Mardi Vasey directing play and Bec McGlinchey starring the team performed up to expectation.

These are the best results the College has recorded in Soccer and we look forward to taking the next step into the Semi Finals in coming years.

Victorian Schools Netball Championships
One hundred and ten Christian College students participate at the Victorian Schools Netball Championships in 11 teams from the Middle School, Bellarine and Senior School campuses.
Competition at the State Netball Centre is fast a furious with games consisting of 2 x 8 minute halves. One turnover or indecision can cost either team. In such a competitive environment it was a pleasure to watch and hear the Christian College coaches setting goals, advising players on tactics, encouraging them to take on their opponents and supporting them whether they won, lost or drew.

The Highton campus Junior (Year 7 & 8) Boys & Girls and the Senior School Intermediate (Year 9 & 10) Boys progressed to the State Final by remaining undefeated throughout the round robin competition. As a College we congratulate all students on the manner in which they represented the school and we wish the teams progressing to the State Finals all best.

Intermediate Boys finish 5th at Basketball State Finals The Christian College Intermediate Boys Basketball team has finished 5th in the state finals of the Victorian College Championships. The boys qualified for the finals during term 2 with a perfect 6-0 record at the regoinal tournament and followed up with a solid performance in the state finals. The team led by Geelong Junior Representative players Michael Dunlop and Conor Sumner-Foster started the day off with two nail biting 2 point losses to Rowville and Mackillop but fought back with wins over Box Hill (2) and Camberwell to claim 5th place. Taylor Adams and Jordan Keras brought some much needed grunt to the team while the athletic Ashley Caldwell, Shane Biddle and Jack Pickering played well. "All the teams we played today are supported by specialist basketball programs that are incorporated into their daily schooling and that is a huge help to them. Our guys showed great fight throughout the day and had a chance to win every game. Dunlop did a great job inside and on the glass but we needed another big man to help him and another shooter would have helped spread the floor, so with all things considered the result is excellent" said Coach Jamie O'Loughlin. The school has had some great success this year, not only have these boys finished 5th but the Senior Girls also finished 5th and the Year 7 Boys won the GISSA Tournament while the Grade 5/6 Boys and Girls teams from Highton have qualified for the semi finals of the Hooptime event.

Basketball Stars of the Future at Geelong Hooptime Almost 100 grade 3/4 students from Christian College Geelong took to the basketball courts at the Arena on Friday 31st July to compete at the Geelong Hooptime Tournament. The students from both the Junior School and Bellarine Campus made up 4 Allstar teams and 8 Mixed Rookies Teams to take on teams from all over the region. The Allstar teams performed very well against some tough opposition but they proved to be up to the challenge and played very well. The Belmont Boys and Girls Allstar teams made the grand final following thrilling semi-final wins but ran out of steam in the final. The Bellarine Boys and Girls teams competed really hard all day and finished 5th in their sections. In the Mixed Rookies the teams play a round robin without finals. The 8 teams had mixed results on the scoreboard but showed a wonderful spirit and outsanding sportsmanship throughout the day. "To have almost 100 young players here representing the school was amazing and shows the high level of interest in basketball at the school. The players performed very well and the staff and coaches did a wonderful job guiding the players. The future of basketball at Christian College looks bright, there was a lot of talent on display" said Head Coach Jamie O'Loughlin. The school has had great success over the past few years in the Hooptime tournament, last year the Grade 5/6 Boys from Middle School played in the State Final at Hisense Arena before the Dragons NBL game. Primary Winter Sport
The Christian College Year 5 & 6 students have continued their excellent display on the sporting arena throughout the winter months. Within the Southern District Sports Association College teams qualified to represent the Association in the Girls Netball, T Ball and Boys Football. All teams participated at the Barwon Zone Carnivals which brings together the representatives from the 16 Districts within the Barwon region.

For the first time ever the Bellarine Girls Netball team progressed to the Barwon Zone Carnival. The girls played some very good netball winning their final for 5th & 6th against Fyans Park Primary School. The better players on the day were Elizabeth Lowe, Emily Hoare and Lilly Herzer Gradual improvement under the guidance of Mr. Peter Fagan saw the Highton T Ball team qualify for the Barwon Zone’s. Placing 6th overall the team performed very well, with special mention to Captain Ben Lewis who led the team with distinction. Progressing through the preliminary round with encouraging wins to the Semi Finals the Highton Footballers were quietly confident taking on Chilwell Primary School. In a hard fought game Christian College took an early lead, however inaccurate kicking in front of goal meant that the lead was only four points at half time. Chilwell, aided by a strong breeze, proved too strong in the second half, eventually winning by 10 points. While every player contributed something positive, some of the more consistent players on the day included Josh McNamara, Nathan Burley, Hayden Murrell, Jack Bennett and Sam Egberts.

Senior Boys Football The 2009 Senior Boys football team once again proved successful by making the AFL Victoria Country Herald Shield Competition. The squad of 35 players had trained before the term 1 holiday break and in the break played a practice match against Geelong College Immanuel College from Adelaide. In the GISSA competition the team played Kardinia International College and Saint Ignatius College and they were no match for the Christian College outfit, as we won both games quite convincingly by over 10 goals. Those two wins took us into the Country Herald Shield Competition where we played the winner of the Warrnambool region in Emmanuel College. It was a hard fought match by the boys in the muddy conditions but unfortunately we couldn’t capitalise on our opportunities around goal and the boys from Emmanuel ended up the victors on the day. Our team had outstanding depth especially from our year 10 group and the year 11 and 12 group led the way for the boys to follow in the coming years. Throughout the matches there were many excellent players. We congratulate Taylor Adams on being awarded the Terry Bright medal as the best player in the match against Emmanuel College. Other notable performers were the twins Andrew and Tim Devereaux, Seb Wild, Brenton Adams and Jake Cameron. It was a great achievement for the Senior team and together we look forward to that success continuing and hopefully progressing further into the Championship in the future.
