In the first week of holidays, the Christian College Senior netball team played at the Waverly International Schools Netball Championships. This year we had a fairly young side compared to other teams with one Year 9 student, six Year 10’s and three Year 12 students.
Our future looks promising as we finished 7th overall and actually beat the team that finished 2nd during the rounds. In the qualifying rounds we lost one game to Tenison Woods College and won our game against Gippsland Grammar. This left us playing for positions 5th to 8th on the final day. We lost our first game by 2 points against Alkira Secondary College, which could have gone either way. This meant we had our final match for the week playing for position 7th or 8th against Sacred Heart College from Tasmania. We won this final game by 7 points!
Throughout the week we played against schools from around Australia, including a number of schools with specific netball and sport programs. We also played against Sri Lanka, Malaysia and a team from New Zealand. In our pool we finished 3rd, only losing to two sides. One of these sides was Wesley College and they actually won the whole tournament.
We had great performances by the whole group, which was led by our captain Hannah Van Gemst under the post and assisted by Gina McLeod. These two Year 12 students were instrumental in leading the team on and off the court. They will be missed next year. Other great performances throughout the week were by upcoming talent from Year 10 students Emily Moroney and Georgia Ryan.
Students involved in the week included; Year 12 students - Hannah Van Gemst, Gina Macleod, Sarah Bumpstead, Year 10 students - Georgia Ryan, Sarah Arstall, Emily Moroney, Madeline Vines, Nicole Mayes and Rachael Kirtley and Year 9 student Isabel Hackett.
They were a great bunch of girls to spend the week with and represented Christian College in a wonderful manner.
