50 interested parents from both Junior School and Middle School met together on Monday to hear Mr. Nigel Lane speak about Cyber Safety. Nigel, of course, is well known to many through his recent role as Senior School Chaplain during the past seven years. His wealth of experience with young people in different settings, his vast knowledge of the different forms of social media, his interesting anecdotes, and knowledge of our school community provided a practical framework for parents to use with their children.
Communication within the family regarding social media and the setting of boundaries based around the family’s values were key points in his presentation. The benefits and pitfalls of the cyber world were examined in detail.
A Junior School Parent, Mrs. Carolyn Williams, best summed up the tone of the night:
"Thank you for the informative and empowering evening on Cyber Safety by Nigel. It was wonderful as a parent of three young children to have the opportunity to learn new parenting approaches to a rapidly increasing dilemma of internet, mobile phone and general computer usage. I appreciated his honesty, fair and level approach to situations where as parents, we may panic or be really out of depth with our own knowledge. It highlighted that for our children and for us as parents, information and education is the key. Thank you also to our wonderful school for the proactive approach in offering this evening to the Christian College school community."
From a school perspective it was pleasing to see parents being proactive and supportive of these special evenings to strengthen the partnerships shared between school and home.
