Leading Author Visit

On Friday the 5th of August, the years 5, 6, 7 and 8 had the experience of listening to leading author, stand-up comedian and primary school teacher, Oliver Phommavahn. It was a very engaging, entertaining and funny experience and his delivery style helped Oliver get his points across.

Oliver’s inspiration for his stories come from regular, everyday things. His first story, THAI-RIFFIC! was inspired by his embarrassing family. His inspiration for other stories has also come from his observations of everyday life and reading books. This showed us that you don’t need amazing things to happen to you all the time for you to come up with ideas for great stories. Inspiration can be found all around you, especially in your imagination.

As you may be able to tell from the fact that he’s a stand-up comedian, Oliver wasn’t the sensible, mature person you may think of when it comes to an author. As a child, Oliver was the class-clown and had a very creative mind, including a love of pretending to be a dinosaur. His teachers would tell him to ‘grow up’ but he had another idea. Instead, he would act like a kid and make jokes for a living! There are so many types of books, and types of authors, which can really show that you don’t have to be a certain type of person, or what people tell you to be to follow your passion.
