Dear Middle School families,

It is with much excitement that I write my first weekly parent email as Head of Middle School Highton. I have enjoyed a smooth transition back ‘home’ to Middle School after spending nine and a half years serving the Bellarine community of Christian College. It is an honour and a privilege to be appointed to such an important position within the life of this Campus and I look forward to partnering with you, alongside our staff, as you parent your young person through their adolescent years.

The students have been wonderfully welcoming and friendly on their return to school this morning, although the highlight I must say was on entering our Commencement Assembly this morning, a strapping young Year 7 boy congratulated me on my position, wished me the best of luck, then proceeded to encourage me with ‘we’re expecting big things’!! It most certainly made me smile.

As I reflected on this ‘expectation’ throughout the day, I realised that I too am expecting ‘big things’ from our students as they continue their personal, educational and spiritual journey’s through the middle years. I am also reminded and encouraged that we can expect ‘big things’ from our heavenly Father when we turn our eyes, hearts and minds to His calling in our lives. A journey that I eagerly look forward to sharing with your child during their time here at Middle School.

Welcome back to school to begin our second semester. It has been lovely to see all of the happy faces of our children today and there was such an excited buzz of chatter and catching up as the children came into assembly this morning. We welcome four new students who commenced at our campus today - Yash (1R), Kendrah (2G), Bronte (3G) and Kendra (4R) - as well as teachers Mrs Marsland (Prep B), Mrs Neville (1R) and Mrs Brunt (Music for 3 weeks while Mr Smith enjoys some very well earned Long Service Leave). We are delighted that they can be here and wish each one a very happy and rewarding time at Junior School throughout the next weeks, months and years of their time with us.

From next week, our Middle School weekly email will be delivered through a new web-based platform, allowing for a far more flexible, dynamic and aesthetically  pleasing read. It will also provide greater opportunity for us to share more of the learning journey we’re undertaking, through photos, video etc, to include and involve our parents in the Learning that Matters! You can look forward to receiving your first NEW weekly correspondence, called ‘The Vine’ on Friday of week 2. This will then become a weekly occurrence on a Friday.

An exciting feature of Term 3 will be our Junior School Olympics Day on Tuesday 2nd August, when all students will participate in a range of multi-aged Olympic Themed activities. The Olympics Day will be a valuable time for students to mix with students and teachers from different year levels and engage in a range of cultural activities based on ‘Olympic’ countries.

The Day will culminate in a Junior School Olympic Opening Ceremony in the Assembly Hall at 2.00pm. This ceremony will include a presentation, from each year level, of a short item relating to their chosen country. Families and friends are warmly invited to attend this event which we hope will be a highlight of our school year. There will be limited seating available on the day.

Parents, please note that students are to wear sports uniform on this day. We look forward to seeing you at the Opening Ceremony.

I welcome all our families and students back for what I trust will be an excellent term 3. It is the last full term for our Year 12 students and I am sure they will make the most of this term. The Year 12 students I have spoken to, made the most of their time at home and were able to complete work and revision. We wish them well.

The winter has really gripped and we remind families that the correct uniform needs to be worn at all times.

The College photographs shall be taken tomorrow, Thursday 14th July, and we ask that families ensure that their child’s uniform is correct. These photographs are used for a variety of purposes and it is important for students to be properly attired. If a student is not appropriately presented then they risk not being allowed in the photographs. Hair needs to be tied back if longer than the shoulders and the boys need to ensure they shave properly for the photographs.

We thank families for their support in this matter.

Please note that we have a student in 3R with Human Parvovirus known as Erythema Infectiosum (commonly called Slapped Cheek Disease).  This is a common childhood viral infection that can be very contagious however Human Services Victoria advises that children with Slapped Cheek Disease are NOT required to be excluded from School.  The only people at risk from this virus are non-immune persons who are immunosuppressed (due to illness and/or treatment), have chronic haemolytic disorders, or are pregnant as the virus can be passed from a pregnant mother to her unborn child.  If you have concerns that you may have been in contact with Slapped Cheek Syndrome please consult your supervising doctor immediately.

Slapped Cheek Disease generally causes a mild illness with little or no fever but a striking redness of the cheeks (hence the common name).  This is followed one to four days later by a lace-like rash on the trunk and limbs that fades but may recur over several weeks on exposure to heat.  There is no specific treatment for the infection.  Adults often have little rash, but may experience joint pains and swelling that are sometimes prolonged.  Many cases experience no symptoms at all.

Our Middle School Campus student photographs will be taken on Tuesday 19th July by Arthur Reed Photographs commencing at 9.00am. Students will be photographed in Class/Homeroom groups. Individual portraits of each student will also be taken on this day. For this reason it is important that student uniforms are neat and correct from top to bottom, including clean black school shoes. Parents are requested to ensure that all students are appropriately attired in full College winter uniform. Girls are only to wear navy ribbons to tie hair back please. Blazers will be required for all Middle School students.

Commencing on Monday of next week is our annual Futures Week. This is a program, first introduced 2 years ago, in which guest speakers come to our College to speak about pathway options during House Group time. Many are from Tertiary providers and explain what their Institutions provide in relation to courses, support and future careers.

It enables our Year 11 & 12 students to think about pathway possibilities and we are fortunate to have an array of excellent speakers.

The Futures Week leads into our Subject Expo.

The annual, compulsory NCCDSSD census will occur in August 2016. The NCCDSSD aims to count students with previously fundable levels of disability as well as students with special learning needs or ongoing health or mental health conditions which have a functional impact on the student’s education, require educational adjustments to support their participation in education on the same basis as students without disability, require active monitoring and consultation, and in some cases, ongoing teacher education.

This broader brushstroke of acknowledgement is due to the very expansive definition of disability within the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Education Standards of 2005.

The NCCDSSD data is not directly linked to recurrent funding of students with disability however the federal Minister for Education and training recently announced that additional funding to support students with disability will be distributed based on NCCD data. No details released to date.

The NCCDSSD Census date is the 5th August, on which date, numerical and non-identifiable data will be collated and sent through to ISV, (Independent Schools Victoria).

A copy of the Australian Government’s Public Information Notice regarding the data collection is available at

I do wish to thank the music staff for giving up half of their holidays to lead and supervise the students. This is why we have a music program second to none. Well done to all.

More information about this amazing trip will be published soon.
