Indonesian Independence Day

On Wednesday 17th August Year 10 Indonesian language students joined officials, community members and fellow school students to commemorate the 71st anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence, held at the Consulate General in South Melbourne.

The official flag raising ceremony was a very formal occasion and it gave students a firsthand experience of Indonesia’s national day and the opportunity to meet and chat in the language with young Indonesians living and studying in Melbourne.

Students enjoyed a full day of cultural experiences, including a spicy lunch at the Batavia Café and the chance to shop at the Laguna Supermarket for cooking ingredients for their family meal project. The afternoon was topped by a community dance performance for the public at Federation Square.

Commemorating Indonesia’s most important historic event right here in Melbourne was a wonderful opportunity to add to students’ current studies and their understanding of the food, celebrations and ceremonies of Australia’s significant neighbour.
