Interested in a career with Victoria Police?
Victoria Police includes Police Officers, Protective Services Officers and Police Custody Officers.
To be eligible for employment with Victoria Police, you must be an Australian citizen; an Australian permanent resident; a New Zealand citizen with a valid passport; or a citizen of another country with a valid visa that provides Australian work rights.
The recruitment process encompasses a number of stages: submit application, shortlisting, interviews, background checks: offer of employment. This process may take up to 2 years. There is a demand for female applicants.
All successful applicants will be required to undergo a number of background checks including reference checks, national name and police checks, fingerprinting, declarable associations and solvency prior to employment. Progressing to undergo background checks does not guarantee an offer of employment.
To join the Victoria Police you must have completed your VCE or VCAL if you choose to join when 18 years of age. If you don’t have your VCE or VCAL, you must be 21 years of age to join. You may start the process when you turn 18 but not yet have gained your VCE/VCAL – the process will be completed after this time.
You may have a manual or automatic licence and can be on your P’s.
Teamwork is considered an important part of the job and so it is good to be part of a sporting team / have a casual job / volunteer.
If your application is successful, you will then undergo 33 weeks of training at the Academy. PSO training is 12 weeks in the Academy and it has a shorter application process. There is not an automatic transition from PSO to Police positions.
You must be emotionally intelligent, and this is why the Victoria Police do not often take applicants who are 18. These applicants are often asked to ‘go out and experience life’ first. You must wait 12months in between applications if you are unsuccessful the first time.
During the application process, your social media accounts are scrutinized, so be very careful what you post!
