Pancakes are a big hit in Years 3 & 4

This week all of the Year 3 and 4 classes participated in a big pancake cook up as part of their Term 4 Integrated Studies Unit: Materials, Forces and Heat. The Year 3 and 4 students over the past few weeks have been researching and learning all about the 3 states of matter; solids, liquids and gases.

Their pancake project was all about discovering the effect that heat has on solids and liquids. Their task was to observe the different ingredients that go into a pancake mixture and discover whether or not any of the ingredients changed from one state to another due to the cooking process.

The students made many discoveries, for example; as soon as the solid butter was added to the hot cooking pan it melted and turned into a liquid. They made reasonings for the different changes that had occurred. For instance, the butter didn’t necessarily melt all at once, rather, it softened over the increased temperature and time, until finally a temperature was reached where the particles were freed and it became almost entirely a liquid.

Year 3 and 4 loved discovering LOTS of science from a simple pancake recipe. We also got to enjoy eating the pancakes once we had finished which was a yummy bonus!
