Year 9 Community Service

Wednesday at Bellarine was a special day for the Year 9 students. They were happy and tired after a spectacular night of dancing, all dressed up in stunning suits and dresses, behaving beautifully and having FUN. It was a privilege to share the time and space with our departing Year 9 students. Parents should be very proud of the young people that graced the floor.

But back to Wednesday… a day of service to community on different levels. Some students prepared a Mexican themed lunch for their cohort and teachers with Mrs Gray. A small group worked with Mr Durran to create videos reflecting on the their final year at Bellarine, as well as collating a montage of images and footage from the Formal. A different group helped provide amenity to “the deck” with the assistance of Alan and Mr Moore. At lunch time, students were able to test out the bean bags and enjoy the newly painted pots with freshly planted trees. Various other acts of service included cleaning Junior School chairs and collecting and sorting donated stationery destined for East Timor.

A special inclusion in the morning’s activities was helping Geelong Mums. A group of boys and girls helped sort and pack age appropriate parcels of clothing for single mums in Geelong who need support. The students were shocked to learn that some mums sleep in their car with their kids while they are fleeing domestic violence. This was just one scenario described by Marelle Jackman, a Christian College parent who volunteers at Geelong Mums. Marelle explained to the Year 9 students the value of what they were doing. In response, our beautiful students wrote messages of strength, love, hope and dignity to the mums who will receive the clothing packs for their children. Some packs were even delivered on the same day.

Again, it has to be said that the students conducted themselves with good humour and demonstrated camaraderie as they worked together on the various projects, all in the service of others. It was a great day enjoyed by all.
