East Timor Project Care Day
It’s the 15th anniversary of the restoration of independence for Timor-Leste next Friday.
Christian College has been supporting the community in Viqueque since 2003, just a year after independence was declared. That’s been a huge commitment from the Christian College community of families, staff and friends. On Friday, 19th May, we invite all students to wear the colours of East Timor: Red, White, Black and Yellow!
Students are asked to bring a donation, and maybe a bit extra, for purchasing handcrafts on the day. 'Project Care Reps' will also be selling handcrafts and wristbands in the colours of East Timor, starting next week during lunchtime. They are $3 for one or $5 for two.
How are we supporting our buddies in Viqueque this year? One school, Riatahau, needs water for their toilets and handwashing facilities. Their well has dried up and a bore needs to be extended. Also, the kids in Viqueque are very keen to learn English.
There are about 100 kids from Primary School right through to Secondary School, who come to lessons at the 'Friendship House' every day after school. They would love their own copy of a Tetun-English dictionary. They cost $6 each in Dili, so it would be fantastic to use our donations to purchase as many dictionaries as possible to help the community of Viqueque realise this dream.
The East Timor special ceremony will commence in the Junior School Assembly Hall at 11:20am with a short flag-raising ceremony. Parents are warmly invited to attend.
