From the Head of Senior School

Resilience

Two weeks ago, I wrote about anxiety and how common that condition is and followed up with a piece on what is being achieved through our Chaplaincy program.

One way to ease anxiety is to build resilience, and this has been researched well in general and through Dr Martin Seligman and his “Positive Psychology”, in particular. This refers to not waiting until a person is anxious before receiving treatment, but to build resilience so that one never reaches those low points. The term and practice of resilience has been around for a very long time and comes under different headings. Being positive has a much better effect than chastising, as we all know. On Seligman’s site: www.authentichappiness.com he has a test of Character Strengths that one may determine, and the aim is to concentrate on what we do well rather than what we do not.

I ask that you visit this site and see how it may assist you and your family.

I welcome your feedback.

Senior School Subject Expo

The Senior School Subject Expo will be held on Wednesday, 26th July, not Wednesday, 19th July as previously advertised.
This is an opportunity for students and their families to visit the Penman Quad at Senior School from 4.00pm to 9.00 pm. Each department will have booths where staff will be available to discuss possible subjects and give advice. This is a valuable opportunity to assist students with not just subjects, but possible pathways.

The night is broken up into the following:
Subject Expo 4.00pm to 6.00pm – for current Year 9 students and parents.
Subject Expo 7.00pm to 9.00pm – for Year 10 students and parents and interested Year 11 students and parents.
Formal Information Sessions - for Year 10 students and parents.

These will be conducted in the Senior School Chapel. To assist with providing for our large group of students, the VCE Presentation will be staged twice. You are welcome to attend any or all of these sessions. When not in the Chapel, you are able to attend the Subject Expo, speaking with as many teachers as possible.
7.00pm: VCE Presentation
7.30pm: VCAL Presentation
8.00pm: VCE Presentation (repeated if required)

*The Bellarine boys will be transported from Back Creek Farm by College bus and will arrive at the Senior Campus at approximately 3:45pm. Parents are encouraged to meet their son at the bus and then tour the Subject Expo with them. It is required that they return to the bus at 6:00pm in order to make a timely departure to Back Creek.
We urge all families to attend and ask any questions you may have, and to receive a range of literature that will better inform you and your child of the options available.

Connor Firth

One of our many talented students is Connor Firth. He is in Year 12 and is a street artist of the highest order. Connor approached me some time back after I heard of his street art following the Bourke Street incident. Connor was so moved by those events that he painted an incredible painting in the Melbourne CBD for those who had lost their lives. Social media picked up on it, with much acclaim.

Connor has painted a mural for each House of their mascot, and these are situated in each House area. You will be able to see the Taylor House Tiger as you enter the Campus. If you have some time to see the others, I promise you it will be worth your while.

We all congratulate Connor!
