VCAL Student of the Week

Year 12 Thomas Hartshorne

My chosen career path is plumbing. I have chosen this because my family are involved in this trade. The VET course I study as part of VCAL is helping me work towards my career. At VET I learn about many different skills and techniques that I will use when working. I have been able to apply what I have learnt to my work placement with my dad. I am better at using snips, which are like scissors. They are made for cutting holes in metal and making stop-ends for gutters. Highlights of my work placement are being able to learn different techniques and how things work, as well as how to make them work. Work on Fridays involves many different things like replacing gutters, replacing water lines for hot and cold water lines in bathrooms. I have also done little jobs like replace taps, toilets and showervheads. Something I experienced this year was replacing some sewer pipes. We were digging out a trench and one of the workers ripped through a water line with the digger. Water filled up the trench and we had to bucket all the water off. VCAL and VET is a great program for me, as it gives me many opportunities to prepare for becoming a plumber.
