Year 4 Bike Ed Program

The Year 4 Bike Education program will be taught to children next term during their timetabled Sport classes on Thursdays.

This program will start in Week 3, Thursday, 26th October, and conclude with a day bike ride on Thursday, 30th November. The aims of the Bike Education program are to enable students to:

  • Gain knowledge and understanding of the road traffic environment and the road laws.
  • Develop the physical and cognitive skills to manage the cycling pathways and road traffic environment safely as cyclists.
  • Develop responsible behaviours, attitudes and decision-making skills for the safe use of bicycles both on and off the road

For each child to participate in the program, they will require a bicycle in safe working order and an approved helmet that fits correctly and is in good condition. A bike safety check will be undertaken in the first week of the program and we ask for your cooperation in having any necessary repairs, adjustments or replacements made prior to this date.

A helmet and riding gear safety check will also be undertaken and it is essential that your child’s helmet fits comfortably and securely, and that the polystyrene foam liner is undamaged. Each child will wear their sports uniform for every practical riding session.

There is a Bike Education ‘Safety Check’ form attached for preparation of these sessions. Please use the school holiday period to check your child’s bike and get any necessary repairs completed prior to the program beginning.

The program consists of classroom and cycling activities done outdoors in the school grounds and on cycling pathways when we undertake our day bike ride. Your child will be required to have their bike at Junior School on each Thursday of the program to practise their riding skills. I know this can be a burden to transport the bike each week, so if it is easier, your child’s bike can remain in the gym for the weeks of the program.

Parents will be notified before our day bike ride is undertaken. All of these activities will be supervised. I wish to thank you for your support of this program, and if you have any queries then please do not hesitate to contact me.
