Historians in the Making

The Year 7 History curriculum begins with thinking about how artefacts can reveal the past.  Using the ‘Building Learning Power’ dispositions of Questioning, Noticing and Revising, students hypothesise and draw conclusions about items from a “Mystery Shoebox”.  Each student brought in a shoebox containing items which relate somehow to their life:  a dog lead, a football jersey, some paintbrushes, a souvenir.  Students have fun connecting these mystery items to draw a picture of the person who may own the box.  The idea is not to come to a firm conclusion about who the owner is (that’s a bonus!), but to reason and make connections, to question previous ideas.  It is a noisy, fun, interactive activity.
