Indonesian sister school SMAN 2 Mataram visit
‘On Monday, 5th of March, the student exchange group from the College’s Indonesian sister school SMAN 2 Mataram had the opportunity to visit the Middle School – Highton campus. This full day visit followed on from an afternoon the previous week in which the visiting group had a tour of the new Year 9 program.
Upon arriving at Middle School, the group, consisting of 28 students (from Years 10 and 11) and 4 staff were greeted by Year 9 students currently studying Indonesian. After a group photo, the exchange students broke off into small groups to join in some of the Year 9 elective classes.
One of these groups were put into a design challenge with Mr O’Kelly. Their task was to create a track to send a marble from the top of a wall to the bottom. The Indonesian exchange students and our Year 9 Indonesian students enjoyed working together to solve this design challenge.
The second group visited Ms Rogerson’s kitchen to work together to create some Australian treats to accompany the group lunch. Working together, the students created meringue nests and damper, to give our guests a true taste of Australia.
After the group lunch, the Year 5 and 6 students, as well as the cohort of Year 8 Indonesian students, welcomed the SMAN 2 Group into the Chapel for an official service. Michelle Zhao and India Lewis opened the service with a welcome speech, followed by a prayer delivered in English and Indonesian from Annabelle Geall and Sophie Moore.
Following some formalities of speeches and the exchanging of gifts, the Year 5 and 6 students had the opportunity to ask questions of, and get to know the Indonesian exchange group. The service ended up with a stage full of Christian College and SMAN 2 Mataram students dancing an Indonesian dance together.
A big ‘Terima kasih’ to everyone who helped to make this a wonderful experience for the students of both schools.’
