Literature Classes to the Botanical Gardens
On the Friday evenings of the 2nd and 9th of March respectively, the Year 11 and Year 12 Literature classes enjoyed the experience of venturing to Melbourne by train to taste the delights of Shakespearean live performance in the Royal Botanic Gardens. The Australian Shakespeare Company’s performances of firstly A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Twelfth Night (both rollicking comedies) were received by the students with delight and enthusiasm. As each of these plays is a set text the students were also able to deepen their understanding of classic theatre and realize how enduring the themes of love, confusion and the human comedy remain. Best of all iambic pentameter was made easily accessible to them via the medium of actors unafraid to declaim Elizabethan and Jacobean language so that the poetry truly lived. Despite the extremely late returns and the vagaries of train travel putting parents patience to the test it was agreed to be a resoundingly successful educational opportunity.
