Health and Physical Education
Term 2 has got off to great start as we continue to enjoy the warm sunny weather. The yard looks amazing and we are thankful for and enjoying our new hardcourt area and basketball tower.
During this term, the students will be focusing on the Fundamental Motor Skills of Catch, Throw and Kick. Although these skills are introduced in Prep, most students may not correctly execute all of the skill components until Year 3 or 4. This can be helped along by taking some time to practice these skills with your child at home. Footy season will certainly help out with our kicking.
Our Health topic this term looks at healthy eating and is titled, ’Food Glorious Food’.
The students have been introduced to the ‘Australian Guide to Healthy Eating’ and through discussions have gained a better understanding of the variety of nutritious foods we should eat every day and the importance of drinking water regularly throughout the day. We acknowledged ‘sometimes foods’ and discussed that they are a part of our lives and the need to manage how often we have unhealthy foods.
We have also discussed the need to eat a healthy breakfast and why it is the most important meal of the day. The students were surprised when they realised how long our bodies go without food, from dinner the night before until early the following morning. We also talked about the effects this has on our bodies and our ability to concentrate and learn.
Later in the term, we will be looking at dental health and how to care for our teeth. Before I studied teaching, I was a Dental Nurse, so this is a subject I enjoy educating children about and the importance of good oral hygiene and diet.
I hope your child can bring home some healthy eating tips for you to practice and you can guide them to think about the food they eat at home and school.
