Poppy Schaap and Lucy Were – Named in Victorian AFL Team

We would like to congratulate two of our Year 9 students, Poppy Schaap and Lucy Were who have recently been named in the Victorian Secondary School AFL team to compete at Nationals in Adelaide in July.

Lucy started playing footy at the age of eight and competed alongside the boys until the age of 12 when she started to play for Newtown in the Under 18 Youth Girls competition. With the continual growth of junior girl’s football in the region, she commenced playing with Geelong Amateurs in the Under 15 competition last year.

Poppy played in the Under 10 and 12’s competitions for Torquay with the boys but moved away from playing footy to focus on playing basketball. Poppy is a talented basketballer, competing for Geelong Supercats regularly and she has represented Vic Country in the past. Poppy was enticed back to the game of footy last year during the season and started playing in the Geelong Amateurs Under 15 side with Lucy.

Both Poppy and Lucy represented the Geelong Falcons in the V/Line Cup in 2017 after successful seasons locally and won a premiership in the Under 15 competition for Geelong Amateurs. The girls trialed for the Victorian Secondary Schools team alongside approximately 130 other young aspiring athletes and were among only four players from our region selected.

We wish Poppy and Lucy all the very best as they represent Victoria in July.
