'So You Think you Can Design'

Year 8, Middle School Product and Design Textiles students, Heidi Linahan and Sophie Taylor recently competed in a state So You Think You Can Design competition, run by the Design Technology Teachers Association. They competed the first part of the challenge at school, designing a ‘multi-functional’ garment/outfit, using technology to detect UV rays.

Heidi and Sophie were invited to compete at the finals, in a live, hands-on design contest, which was held at the PERSONAL LOCAL GLOBAL Creative Problem Solving conference in Melbourne. On the day, it gave the students the chance to showcase their creative, design thinking skills. They had three hours to design, create and produce their garment. With stiff competition they did extremely well and were awarded 4th place for their hard work and their ability to construct an innovate outfit ,as well as the 'People's Choice Award'.

This was a fantastic learning opportunity for the students and they should be proud of how they presented their work to the judges. The event also gave them the chance to attend a workshop on coding in textiles.

Thank you to the following teachers who helped out during the early planning, prototyping and troubleshooting of their design ideas, Mrs Roselyn Smith Director of Teaching and Learning - Learning Support Services, Danon O'Kelly Digital Technologies and Systems Engineering Teacher Middle School, Antony Benson, Director of Teaching and Learning - Art, Technology, Design.
