Ravens and Woolworths trips
Over the past 2 weeks students from the ‘How Does Your Garden Grow’ elective went on a journey of discovery outside the boundaries of Middle school. The first stop on this journey was to Raven’s Creek Farm and Café, where the students took part in a very informative tour of the property and a look at how important it is to look after the whole garden environment, particularly the soil. Students were able to get up close with many of the animals that are on the property and learn how the owners look after the animals. The key message was healthy soil, healthy animals, healthy food.
The second trip on this journey was to an Ornamental Garden near Ceres Lookout owned by Judy and Earl Medlyn and then on to Barrabool Hills Woolworths. The experience at the garden allowed the students to select a plant species that intrigued them and record why it did so. The final stop was to Barrabool Hills Woolworths were the lovely staff showed the students around the produce section of the store. This experience provided the students with more of the story behind where our food comes from and what the process is behind the food we buy from the store.
The students all thoroughly enjoyed both excursions and have been reflecting on what they have learnt. They will then use these experiences to help inform their final assessment for the term.
