Year 9 Food Technology Excursion - Manzanillo Olive Grove

A small group of Year 9 Food Technology girls took an excursion to Manzanillo Olive Grove on Monday, July 18th. The purpose of the visit was to look at a local food business producing a quality food product. Manzanillo Olive Grove is a family owned and run company that has been established since 1997 distributing their range of olive oils and table olives to many gourmet delicatessens, IGA supermarkets, shops and local restaurants. The students were treated with a tasting of their olive oil products and a variety of different olives grown on their 44 acre property. We were also taken through the manufacturing shed and shown the production machinery processes for all their products, with detailed explanations of each process right through to how the products are packaged for retail sale. The students had the opportunity to ask and discuss any questions regarding the running of the business with the owner, including things like how they came up with the labelling and the background behind the name of the business. Overall our informative tour gave the students valuable insight into a local small business and manufacturing knowledge of an olive farm and making olive food products.

The excursion concluded with us returning to the Food Tech kitchen and using the balsamic reduction purchased from the grove to make fresh bruschetta on crunchy bread with cherry tomatoes, fetta, red onion and basil – delicious!
