On Thursday we were fortunate to host a well- known author, James Phelan. All students in Years 7 and 8 attended sessions where James entertained them with his humour, whilst instilling an enthusiasm for reading and writing. James talked about why he became a writer, and where his ideas came from, as well as giving the students practical tips for structuring their own writing. His description of his own stories was so lively and enthralling that we had many students eager to reserve our library copies of his books.
James’ ability to engage the students was evidenced by the number of questions he fielded at the end of each session. One student in each group was even fortunate enough to receive an autographed copy of one of his books.
Students in the Year 7 Writer’s Workshop elective had the added benefit of working with James in a workshop where he was able to guide them with advice for improving their narratives; a rare treat for a dedicated group of would be writers.
